NBA Player Props: A Practical Guide to Reading Hit Rates

By UnitLocker Team

NBA player props are some of the most popular markets in sports — and some of the easiest to misread. The line looks reasonable, the player is a star, so the over feels safe. Here's a more disciplined way to read them, built around the same data UnitLocker surfaces for NBA props every night.

The common NBA prop markets

  • Points — the headline market, and the most affected by pace and matchup.
  • Rebounds — driven by role, minutes and opponent rebounding rate.
  • Assists — tied to on-ball usage and who is finishing around the player.
  • PRA (points + rebounds + assists) — a combo line that smooths out single-category variance.
  • Threes made — high-variance, but very matchup- and volume-dependent.

Start with the hit rate, not the name

A player's reputation is already priced into the line. What you actually want to know is how often they've cleared *this* number recently. That's what last-5 (L5) and last-10 (L10) hit rates tell you: out of the player's last 10 games, how many would have cleared this prop?

A prop that's cleared 8 or 9 of its last 10 is a real signal. One sitting at 5 of 10 is closer to a coin flip. UnitLocker shows L5, L10 and a history chart on every card precisely so you can make that read yourself in seconds — more on the approach in Is UnitLocker Legit?.

Then layer in context

Hit rate is the foundation, but a few factors can confirm or undercut what the number suggests:

  • Minutes and role. A hot hit rate means little if the rotation just changed or the player is on a minutes restriction.
  • Pace. Fast-paced games create more possessions — and more chances at points, rebounds and assists.
  • Matchup. Some defenses funnel volume to specific spots; check how the opponent defends the player's position.
  • Injuries. A teammate sitting out can spike usage, or draw a tougher defensive assignment.
  • Head-to-head. H2H history against tonight's opponent can reveal a stylistic edge the season average hides.

Mind the line movement

If a line moves a point or two from where it opened, the market is telling you something — usually news worth chasing down. A number whose recent history still looks strong after the line has moved against it is more interesting than one that only looks good at a stale price.

How UnitLocker surfaces NBA props

Rather than dumping the whole board on you, UnitLocker surfaces a focused set of NBA props each night, each with its hit-rate history attached. The strongest recent trends — players clearing 90%+ of their last 10 — are auto-flagged as Fire Props and pinned to the top. From there, the read is yours to make.
